Linework was traditional, coloring done on my phone. Have I mentioned that I love the artistic direction of Splatoon?

Meanwhile in Japan…
China has been reading my fanfics…
Half way through the month and I’m already shattering my data limit. I think I use Tumblr too much…
Am I the only person who spent the first half of their life wondering why the logo said Walt Gisney?
Another old picture but hey, it answers an ask!

You didn’t think the ant thing was all I was going to post, did you? That was just a lark! Back to more silliness.

Well… I guess it’s only logical that she would be a red ant.

Honestly, why wouldn’t I? The man is a master at what he does. I’ll even set aside my fanatical devotion for a while, forgetting that I’ve followed his work since I was a teenager and reference his work dozens of times, and approach it with a strictly objective view.
For starters, he’s just an outstanding artist. Even if you do not like his style, you have to appreciate that it’s well done. After all, those familiar with his career can see how his style has remained consistent yet increasingly more polished over the last decade. His anatomy is superb (if mildly exaggerated at times to make things more round and smooth). And it’s not all characters with one body type either. He shows diversity in both males and females and even species.
Furthermore, the guy is a good writer. He understands plot structure, narrative, suggestions and the under-appreciated inner monologue. His comics aren’t filled with ridiculous hentai dialog. When characters talk or narrate, it adds to the scene and to me, that extra context, to be able to get into the minds of the characters, just makes it that much more satisfying.
And the man doesn’t JUST draw porn. Better Life is a charming and at times, even heart-warming story. And he makes it for FREE! He doesn’t just draw things to bring in the dollars. You can see that he really loves what he does and he cares for the characters which shows in his work; be it a hardcore adult story about a young girl running away from her farm life to find freedom, both spiritual and sexual, among the wolf tribe, or a story about a mother and father caring for their three children.
But perhaps the thing I feel goes mostly ignored but I find is one of the most important of all: Jay Naylor is INCREDIBLE at layouts. The way he painstakingly crafts each page, the panels, the figured, the dialog, each delicately placed so perfectly to guide the eye through each image. He knows how to fill a frame and he knows when to break them. I could even take the page he posted and show you exactly how he guides the eye from left to right and top to bottom. He could write a freaking text book on layouts and I can only hope to one day reach that level of expertise.
TL;DR: Jay Naylor is a freaking legend and yawl best respect.
